Bulu ayam yang telah diubahsuai mempunyai potensi untuk dijadikan biopenjerap yang membolehkan penyingkiran ions plumbum(II) dalam larutan air. Bulu ayam telah diberikan rawatan awal dengan menggunakan larutan alkali dan asid berkepekatan 1 M. Bulu ayam yang dirawat oleh alkali telah menunjukkan prestasi biopenjerapan yang terbaik berbanding yang lain. Kesan daripada pH, jumlah bahan biopenjerap, kepekatan larutan logam berat dan masa penjerapan yang diambil telah di kenalpasti. Penjerapan optima telah diperhatikan pada pH 5, 1.5 grams bahan biopenjerap, 50 ppm kepekatan larutan logam berat dan 60 minit masa penjerapan yang diambil. Peratusan maksimum penyingkiran pada keadaan optima adalah sebanyak 93.5%. Keputusan data keseimbangan yang terbaik telah dihuraikan oleh sesuhu Langmuir dengan nilai R2 sebanyak 0.9808 yang bermaksud hanya satu lapisan logam berat ion yang melekat pada permukaan biopenjerap. Keupayaan penjerapan maksimum bagi sesuhu Langmuir adalah 7.28 mg/g. Keputusan daripada kinetik penjerapan tindakbalas pseudo-kedua menunjukkan bahawa bulu ayam yang dirawat dengan alkali yang digunakan dalam kajian ini telah menjalani proses penyerapan kimia yang kuat dengan ion plumbum(II). Untuk pencirian bulu ayam yang dirawat oleh alkali, fungsi kumpulan diperhatikan mempunyai perubahan intensiti adalah kumpulan C-Cl, kumpulan C-O, kumpulan C-H dan C-OH. Daripada kajian ini, fungsi kumpulan C-Cl, C-O dan C-OH telah hilang manakala kumpulan fungsi C-H telah muncul, menunjukkan proses penjerapan kebanyakkan berlaku pada kumpulan fungsi ini. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Modified chicken feather has a potential to become biosorbent for removal of lead (II) ions in aqueous solutions. The chicken feathers were pre-treated using alkali and acid solutions at 1M concentration. Alkaline treated chicken feathers have resulted the best biosorption performance among others. The effects of pH, biosorbent dosage, concentration of heavy metal solution and contact time were studied to find the optimum condition for biosorption. Optimum adsorption was observed at pH 5, biosorbent dosage of 1.5g, 50 ppm of initial heavy metal solution concentration and 60 min of contact time. Under the optimum conditions, the highest % removal recorded was 93.5%. Results showed that equilibrium data were best described by the Langmuir isotherm with R2 value of 0.9808, which means monolayer of heavy metal ions stickled on the biosorbent surface. Maximum adsorption capacity was 7.28 mg/g from Langmuir. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order, and this indicates that the alkaline treated chicken feathers used in this study undergone the strong chemisorption process with the lead (II) ions. For characterization of alkaline treated chicken feathers, the functional group observed to have changes in intensity were C-Cl group, C-O group, C-H group and C-OH. From this study, C-Cl, C-O and C-OH functional group have disappeared while C-H functional group has appeared, indicates that adsorption process was occurred mostly at this functional group.
