This British Standard specifies a numeric method for representing dates and times for the purpose of information interchange between systems. The format is intended to:
Provide clear, unambiguous representations of dates and times.
Facilitate international data exchange by using standardized numeric formats.
Replace inconsistent or ambiguous national formats (e.g., DD/MM/YY vs MM/DD/YY).
Support both human-readable and machine-processable formats.
It includes specifications for:
Calendar dates (e.g., 1989-12-31)
Ordinal dates (e.g., 1989-365)
Week dates (e.g., 1989-W52-7)
Times using the 24-hour clock (e.g., 23:59:59)
Combined date and time representations (e.g., 1989-12-31T23:59:59)
Time zone indication, either as UTC ("Z") or with an offset (e.g., +01:00)
The standard is based on and technically identical to ISO 8601:1988, ensuring compatibility with international conventions.
