Projek ini adalah untuk membina satu sistem imej prapemprosesan bagi terjemahan sistem tulisan isyarat yang boleh melicinkan imej tulisan isyarat untuk proses penyarian sifat. Sistem ini dilancarkan dengan menggunakan papan litar Altera FPGA DE2-70 yang mengandungi cip pemproses Nios II. Teknik prapemprosesan imej dapat melicinkan imej serta menyingkirkan latar belakang yang tidak diingini untuk membantu dan memudahkan proses berikutnya, yakni proses penyarian sifat dan proses padanan, untuk menterjemahkan tanda tulisan isyarat ke perkataan teks. Tanpa sistem prapemprosesan imej, imej tulisan isyarat adalah sukar dikesan di peringkat penyarian sifat dan boleh menggagalkan proses padanan. Dalam projek ini, Quartus II, SOPC Builder dan Nios II EDS perisian diguna untuk membina sistem terbenam. Dengan bantuan Quartus II, reka bentuk pelaksanaan perkakasan telah disusun dan dimuat turun ke dalam DE2-70. SOPC Builder digunakan untuk menghubungkan dan mengkonfigurasi komponen-komponen yang diingini dalam sistem ini dalam DE2-70. Selepas itu, Nios II EDS menjalankan pengekodan bahasa pengaturcaraan C untuk mengkod algoritma dan program perilaku pemproses Nios II untuk mengawal komponen-komponen pada DE2-70 untuk mendapatkan keputusan yang diingini. Sistem terjemahan tulisan isyarat akan memanfaatkan dengan menjana cara komunikasi yang lebih mudah antara manusia biasa dengan individu kurang upaya pendengaran. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This project is to build an image preprocessing system of Sign Writing translation that is capable of smoothing the Sign Writing image for the feature extraction process. This system is done by using Altera’s FPGA DE2-70 board which features Nios II soft core processor. Image preprocessing techniques are able to smooth the image as well as to discard the undesired background to aid and to ease the subsequent processes, which are feature extraction and matching process, to translate the Sign Writing image into text word. Without a proper image preprocessing system, the Sign Writing image is difficult to be detected at the feature extraction stage and this could fail the matching process. In this project, Altera’s Quartus II, SOPC Builder and Nios II EDS software are used to construct the embedded system. By the aid of Quartus II, the design of hardware implementation is compiled and downloaded into the DE2-70 board. SOPC Builder is used to interconnect and configure the components that are needed in the system on the DE2-70 board. Subsequently, Nios II EDS performs the C language coding to code the algorithm and to program the behaviour of Nios II processor to manipulate the components on DE2-70 board to obtain the desired result. The Sign Writing translation system would benefit in generating an easier communication way between normal people and deaf people.
