Fusion of vein and geometry for a finger based biometric system

Fusion of vein and geometry for a finger based biometric system / Boon Tee Kai
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Biometric system is popular for the usage of individual identification based on human body characteristics. Finger vein recognition is a commonly used unimodal biometric system, however, it is not sufficient to be employed in the field where highly confidential access control application is required. Hence, a multimodal biometric system is proposed by fusing finger vein and finger geometry authentication. The finger geometry served as a complementary to finger vein authentication and it is aimed to improve the overall performance in terms of accuracy, preciseness and reliability. For geometry recognition, left centroid contour distance (CCD), right CCD and width of the finger are extracted as the features. While the image pixels are used as the features in vein recognition. This project proposed a verification system using sparse representations that integrates similarity score for employing sparsity. Given a pair of finger image and a training data set, two sparse codes are generated using l1-solver, then the similarity of the pair is calculated. Then, SVM is used to fuse the scores of geometry and vein where SVM is a technique that discriminates between two classes using a trained hyperplane. The performances for both geometry and vein biometric systems are under expectation, where their EER are 16.24% and 13.66% respectively. Scores of geometry and vein are fused using SVM and the EER is 0.061%. The proposed multimodal biometric system is successfully developed with objectives of the project are fulfilled. This project is believed to give an impact to recognition field and provides higher security to confidential access control application.
