Fundamental study of porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity of binary mixtures

Fundamental study of porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity of binary mixtures / Siti Rohaya Jokefli
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Porosity and permeability are the important parameters in the filtration process. By knowing the relationship between both parameters, the infiltration rate can be improved. The effectiveness of the swale system depends on both parameters. As the swale system ages, the efficiency of the system deteriorates. As we can normally observe after heavy rain, some parts of the swale system in USM Engineering Campus overflow. This situation happened because as the swale system undergoes the aging process, the voids between the sand particles inside the swale module are clogged by impurities such as organic materials from decayed grasses and leaves, and also due to other impurities transported from road surface. In order to prove that the swale system undergoes the aging process, the on-site permeability test was carried out by using the Guelph Permeameter at several points in the campus. As the result, we could clearly see that some of the swale are undergoing aging process as the soil condition changed from well graded sand to sandy clay loam. Therefore, the aging of the swale system has motivated us to look into the relationship between porosity and permeability caused by the presence of fine material in the porous media. Without trying to mimic the swale condition at the site, this study is intended to prepare a basic framework in order to study with relationship of both parameters by the approach of using two sizes of beads to represent fine material and course material. In this study, glass bead of size of 30mm was chosen as coarse material and glass bead of 0.6-0.8mm as fine material. The effect of the ratio of fine material to coarse material on the value of porosity and permeability was studied by experiments. Therefore, this study provides an understanding on the effect of the ratio of fine to coarse binary material on the efficiency of infiltration. Besides, it also gives an insight to the possible replacement of the aged porous media in the swale system with a new kind of composite media.
