Dalam kajian ini, Mikroorganisma Efektif (EM) digunakan untuk merawat air sisa kilang kelapa sawit (POME). Kecekapan Mikroorganisma Efektif dalam mengurangkan parameter seperti BOD, ammonia nitrogen, TSS dan minyak dan gris telah disiasat dengan menganalisa keputusan daripada eksperimen yang dijalankan. Yakult juga digunakan dalam kajian ini untuk membuat perbandingan antara kecekapan EM dengan Yakult dalam mengurangkan BOD, ammonia nitrogen, TSS dan minyak dan gris yang terdapat dalam air sisa kilang kelapa sawit. Tiga botol serum diisi dengan campuran EM dan POME, campuran Yakult dan POME, serta POME mentah sebagai kawalan eksperimen berada di dalam mod kumpulan dan keadaan anaerobik. Selepas penapaian selama tujuh hari, rawatan POME mentah menggunakan EM mencapai peratus penyingkiran minyak dan gris, TSS dan ammonia nitrogen sebanyak 85.71%, 81.63% dan 85.08%. Peratus penyingkiran minyak dan gris, TSS dan ammonia nitrogen bagi rawatan POME mentah menggunakan Yakult adalah 93.90%, 85.71% dan 46.96%. Peratus penyingkiran minyak dan gris, TSS dan ammonia nitrogen bagi POME mentah sebagai kawalan eksperimen adalah 86.62%, 83.67% dan 83.43%. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat peningkatan kepekatan BOD dalam POME. Hal ini adalah disebabkan nilai BOD bagi Yakult yang meningkatkan BOD dalam POME mentah selepas 7 hari rawatan. Di samping itu, pH yang rendah, keadaan berasid, dan tiada pengaliran masuk dan keluar bahan organik secara berterusan daripada reaktor kumpulan mempengaruhi sistem operasi bagi reaktor kumpulan. Hal ini meningkatkan kandungan VFA dan menghalang peringkat metanogenesis. Nisbah isipadu dos EM dan Yakult yang digunakan ialah 150 ml di dalam 5000 ml campuran (VEM/YAKULT/ Vsample = 3%). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this research, effective microorganisms (EM) are used to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME). The efficiency of effective microorganisms in removing selected parameters such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammoniacal nitrogen, total suspended solid (TSS) and oil and grease are investigated. Modified Yakult was also used in this research to make a comparison between efficiency of effective microorganisms and modified Yakult in removing required parameters. Three serum bottles containing EM mixed with raw POME, modified Yakult mixed with raw POME and raw POME as a control of experiment were conducted in a batch mode and in anaerobic condition. After seven days fermentation time, the treatment of raw POME using EM achieved percentage removal of oil and grease, TSS and ammoniacal nitrogen of 85.71%, 81.63% and 85.08% respectively. Percentage removal of oil and grease, TSS and ammoniacal nitrogen for treatment of raw POME using modified Yakult is 93.90%, 85.71% and 46.96% respectively. Percentage removal of oil and grease, TSS and ammoniacal nitrogen for raw POME as a control of experiment is 86.62%, 83.67% and 83.43% respectively. However, there is an increasing concentration of BOD in POME. This is due to the BOD of modified Yakult which increase BOD of raw POME after 7 days treatment. Besides that, low pH, acidic condition and no continuous inflow and outflow of organic material from the batch reactor influence the operational systems of batch reactor. This can increase volatile fatty acid accumulation and inhibit methanogenesis stage. Ratio by volume for doses of EM and modified Yakult used is 150 ml in 5000 ml mixture (VEM/YAKULT/ Vsample = 3%).
