Treatment of leachate using limestone and zeolite with different configurations using horizontal roughing filter

Treatment of leachate using limestone and zeolite with different configurations using horizontal roughing filter / Nurul Rafhana Khairul Anuar
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This research was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of continuous flow process in the treatment of semi-aerobic landfill leachate using horizontal roughing filter. Two adsorbents, (limestone and zeolite ) were arranged in different configuration of L : Z (1 : 1) , L : Z (2 : 1) and L : Z (3 : 1) in the horizontal roughing filter. The parameters studied in this experiment were Chemical Oxygen Demand, NH3-N, colour and turbidity. For all sets of experiment, leachate samples were circulated in horizontal roughing filter for about two to three weeks depending on the efficiency of absorbents materials. The constant value of parameters at the end of experiments showed that the adsorbents had loses the ability to remove pollutions from the leachate. The results shows that the configurations of L : Z (1 : 1) showed higher percentage removal compared to L : Z (2: 1) and L : Z (3 : 1) configurations for all the studied parameters except for Chemical Oxygen Demand. It can be concluded that the higher the zeolite composition in horizontal roughing filter, the higher the percentage of removal for all parameters. The highest percentage removal was 67.1% for NH3-N in L : Z (1 : 1) configuration and the lowest percentage removal was 15.5% for COD in L : Z (3 : 1) configuration.
