Treatment of landfill leachate using peat soil and laterite soil as natural coagulant

Treatment of landfill leachate using peat soil and laterite soil as natural coagulant / Humadevi Ramachandran
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ There are many technologies that have been introduce and developed for landfill leachate treatment. There have been also wide interest researchers on natural coagulant for the purpose of purifying water and waste water treatment problem. Sanitary landfill leachate is considering worst contaminated industrial waste water. Special attention must be implemented as an approach to dispose and provide efficient treatment to the leachate before release to the effluent. Coagulation and flocculation is one of the technology which using for leachate treatment. It’s also known to be environmentally friendly and cost effective process. However, conventional coagulation and flocculation that are commercialized are mostly chemical based which are non-environmental friendly and may cause an adverse environmental impact even though the effectiveness of the flocculation in treating the leachate is very good. Application of natural coagulants having high future because of their available of source, low price, multifunction and also its biodegradable compare to chemical based coagulant like alum and ferric chloride. For this study, laterite soil and peat soil were selected as natural coagulant to treat intermediate landfill leachate from Alor Pongsu landfill. The efficiency of these coagulants to treat the landfill leachate was investigated based on Jar testing. Jar tests were analyzed based on the percentage of coagulant dosage and the removal of some of the parameters tested were ammonia - nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, iron, zinc, manganese and turbidity. It was found that peat efficient in removing color and COD, while laterite efficient in removing ammonia - nitrogen from landfill leachate compare to peat soil. The best or optimum dosage and pH was determine based on the percentage removal for the selected parameter. The best pH value was found to be pH while the best dosage was found to be in the range of 14g/L to 17g/L because the best flocculation is different for each parameter that was tested. Besides, the laterite soil and peat soil was found to very efficient to remove 95% of the colour from the leachate. Therefore, as the Peat soil have the tendency to remove the pollutants compared to laterite soil, it can be suggested that laterite soil should be used as a medium for pre-treatment of landfill leachate followed by treatment by using peat soil. Hence, based on the study conducted, the laterite soil and peat soil can be considered as an alternative for the treatment of landfill leachate true flocculation process.
