Pasir umumnya adalah berbutir dan tidak mempunyai sifat jelekit menyebabkannya mempunyai keupayaan galas yang rendah dalam keadaan asalnya. Dalam usaha mengukuhkan ciri-ciri geoteknik pasir, matriks pasir perlu diperkukuhkan dengan menggunakan bahan tambah untuk mengikat zarah-zarah pasir bagi mengurangkan keliangan. Dalam kajian ini, bahan tambah yang dipilih adalah bentonit natriumiaitu sejenis tanah liat montmorilonit yang mempunyai kapasiti mengembang yang tinggi. Lazimnya, bahan ini digunakan untuk kerja-kerja penggerudian. Bentonit natrium telah ditambah dengan pasir mengikut peratusan yang berbeza antara 3 – 10% mengikut berat tanah kering. Sampel diuji untuk kekuatan mampatan ekapaksi dan kebolehtelapan. Ujian awal seperti ujian Proctor, analisis ayakan dan ujian penentuan graviti tentu telah dijalankan ke atas pasir untuk menentukan sifat-sifatnya dan perkadaran bahan berdasarkan kandungan lembapan optima dan ketumpatan kering maksima bagi campuran yang berbeza. 80 sampel telah dihasilkan untuk ujian mampatan tak terkurung yang sebelumnya diawet menggunakan kaedah pengeringan udara selama 7 hari untuk mencapai kekuatan maksima. Keputusan ujian menunjukkan bahawa campuran yang mengandungi 9% bentonit natrium mempunyai kekuatan ekapaksi tertinggi, 0.977N/mm2 (0.977Mpa), nilai ketegangan, 0.016 dan nilai kebolehtelapan, k, 5.477 x 10-11 m/s. Kandungan lembapan optima bagi campuran ini adalah 15.2% dan ketumpatan kering maksima adalah 1.764Mg/mm3. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa pengubahsuaian sifat asal pasir menggunakan bahan tambah membolehkannya digunakan untuk pelbagai aplikasi dalam bidang kejuruteraan alam sekitar dan geoteknik seperti tetambak jalan raya, landasan kereta api, dinding diafragma dan pelapik tapak pelupusan. Kelebihan bentonit natrium adalah ia merupakan bahan tambah mesra alam dan tidak menyebabkan pencemaran atau kesan sampingan kepada alam sekitar. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Soils being homogenous in nature display many different characteristic especially in its physical properties. Sand generally is granular and has no cohesion causing it to be porous and possess low bearing capacity in its original state. In order to improve the geotechnical properties of sand for applications in varying conditions, the sand matrix has to be strengthened using additives to bond the particles and reduce its porosity. In this research, the additive used was sodium bentonite, a montmorillonite clay of high swelling capacity commonly used as a wall caking agent for drilling work. Sodium bentonite was added to sand in different percentages ranging from 3 to 10% by dry soil weight and tested for its uniaxial compressive strength and permeability. Characterisation tests such as the Standard Proctor test, sieve analysis test and specific gravity test was conducted on the base material to determine its characteristics to aid proportioning of materials based on the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of mixes with different percentages of bentonite. Approximately 80 samples were produced for the unconfined compression test and cured through air drying for 7 days to achieve maximum strength. The test results showed that sand mixed with 9% sodium bentonite gave the highest ultimate strength of 0.977N/mm2 (0.977Mpa), strain value of 0.016 and permeability constant, k of 5.477 x 10-11 m/s. The optimum moisture content for this mix is 15.2% and the maximum dry density is 1.764Mg/mm3. The outcome exhibits that by modifying the geotechnical properties of sand using additives, it can be utilised for various applications in Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering such as landfill liners, levees, diaphragm walls and embankments for road and railway. The added advantage of this additive is that its eco-friendly, causing no pollution or side effects to the in-situ soil.
