Commercially available activated carbon are still considered expensive due to the use of non-renewable and relatively expensive raw material such as bituminous coal. Therefore, this study investigates the potential use of local fruit waste which is durian peel (DP) as the alternative precursor for the preparation of activated carbon which can be applied for the removal of Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) reactive dyes from aqueous solution. Physiochemical activation consisting of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) impregnation plus carbon dioxide (CO2) gasification was used to prepare the activated carbons. The experimental design results revealed that activation temperature, activation time and impregnation ratio (IR) were important factors influencing the activated carbons yields and adsorption performance for RBBR. The optimum conditions obtained for preparing the activated carbon were 741.81°C, 2.47 h and 1.87 for activation temperature, activation time and IR respectively. The activated carbon prepared were heterogenous mesoporous with high surface area and pore volume. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyses revealed the presence of various functional groups on the activated carbon surfaces. The effect of adsorbate initial concentrations (25-250 mg/L), contact time, solution temperature (30-60°C), solution pH (2-12), isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the adsorption systems were evaluated through batch adsorption test. The RBBR dye adsorption uptakes increased with increasing initial concentration and contact time. The RBBR dye removal efficiency was the highest at pH 2-4. Adsorption equilibrium and kinetic of RBBR dye was best fitted by Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. The adsorption process investigated showed activation energy value lower than 40 kJ/mol which indicates physisorption mechanism.
