Influence of fuel absorption on the mechanical properties of natural fibre composite laminates

Influence of fuel absorption on the mechanical properties of natural fibre composite laminates / Mohamad Syamil Shafiee
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Research in determining the effect of environmental condition on the mechanical properties of composites is very important in proving the capability of composites in various industry. Natural fibre reinforced composites have been widely used in a variety of applications. Despite that, the mechanical properties of natural fibre reinforced composites decrease in exposure to various environmental conditions for long periods. The performance of natural fibre has been questioned by high variability in their mechanical properties. The design data for structural reliability analysis of natural fibres composite laminates is rare too. Due to these uncertainties, the customer and manufacturers have less discouraged in the application of the natural fibres. The objectives of this research are to determine the effect of mechanical properties of natural fibre composite laminates after being immersed in multiple solutions. The quantity of moisture uptake by the composites was taken during the immersion in distilled water, waste cooking oil and waste palm oil. Next, the tensile properties of the composites will be recorded by performing a tensile test using Testometric Universal Testing Machine at room temperature. This research is mainly to develop a deeper understanding of the variability in the mechanical properties of these natural fibres reinforced composites before they can be further accepted by the industry. Multiple journals and papers are used as references related to the research topics. The research was carried out by using flax fibres as the natural fibres and the geometry of composites were fabricated following the ASTM 3039, Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Polymer Matrix Composites Materials. As a result, specimens immersed in distilled water have the highest failure force with 5203 N while the lowest is specimens immersed in waste cooking oil which is 4704 N. Furthermore, specimens immersed in palm oil have the highest maximum stress which is 52.44 MPa while the lowest is waste cooking oil with 44.93 MPa. Young Modulus for palm oil is the highest at 1.04 GPa while the lowest is distilled water specimens with 0.81 GPa. In a nutshell, flax fibre reinforcement composites quality is easily degrading due to the exposure of environmental condition. The amount of moisture uptake is presence and the side effect result in the decrement of mechanical properties of the composites. The various pattern was found after conducting this project. This shows that every condition and solutions have different effects on natural fibre composite laminates.
