Lingkaran merupakan lengkung satah yang berpusing pada satu titik. Ia juga boleh dijumpai di sekitar alam semula jadi. Lingkaran mempunyai konfigurasi tenaga yang rendah. Jadi, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengkaji and membezakan keupayaan struktur lengkung berbentuk lingkaran dalam menahan beban dalam tiga bentuk lengkung sedia ada, iaitu bulatan, elipse, parabola dan empat bentuk lengkung berpotensi, iaitu bulatan involut, hyperbolik, fermat dan lituus. Proses kajian dibahagikan kepada dua peringkat: generasi bentuk lengkung dan permodelan serta analisis unsur terhingga. Dimensi model mempunyai nisbah tinggi panjang 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 dan 0.50. Bagaimanapun, disebabkan perbezaan yang besar antara tinggi model lengkung, model yang nisbah tinggi-panjangnya 0.20 dan 0.25 sahaja digunakan. Kajian ini merangkumi analisis lelurus anjal untuk mencari anjakan serta momen lentur. Keputusan kajian ini menunjukkan bentuk lingkaran yang paling sesuai digunakan sebagai strukur gerbang ialah bulatan involut. Dalam kes tiga bentuk lengkung sedia ada, parabola merupakan bentuk lengkung yang paling berkesan. Parabola juga merupakan bentuk lengkung terbaik antara bentuk sedia ada dan bentuk lingkaran. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Spiral is a plane curve that winds itself around a certain fixed point and can be frequently found in the nature. Spiral is a shape with low energy configuration. The present research has been carried out to investigate and compare the load carrying characteristics of arches in the form of three existing arch shape, i.e. circle, ellipse, parabola and four spiral arch shape, i.e. circle involute, hyperbolic, fermat and lituus. The research process is divided into two stages: arch shape generation and finite element modelling and analysis. The generated arch models have the span of 10.0 m with rise over span ratio of 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50. However, due to large difference in the rise of spiral arch model, only arch model with rise-span ratio of 0.20 and 0.25 are chosen. This research covers linear elastic analysis to determine the displacement and bending moment in the arch structure. From the results, circle involute is found to be the most suitable spiral shape to be used as arch structure. For the three existing arch profiles, parabola is found to be the most efficient arch shape. Parabola is also the most suitable shape to be used for arch structure among all shapes studied.
