Preparation and characterization of pbipalladiumpvp mixed matrix membrane for hydrogen separation / Zulfida Mohamad Hafis Mohd Shafie
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Membrane gas separation for hydrogen (H2) gas has become an attraction by fellow researchers due to its advantage of low cost, small carbon footprint and higher efficiency over conventional purification methods. Nevertheless, the existing polymeric membranes are performance-wise being limited by the Roberson’s upper bound. On the other hand, inorganic membranes particularly palladium (Pd) based, although can perform exquisitely with H2 in terms of permeation and selectivity, suffers from its mechanical strength and high cost. Hence, a new breed of membrane was introduced, named as mixed matrix membrane (MMM) which incorporates inorganic fillers into the continuous polymer matrix for enhanced performance results. In this work, dense polybenzimidazole (PBI) has been chosen as the polymer to be incorporated by Pd nanoparticles with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to act as stabilizers, forming Pd-PVP micro emulsions. Four samples have been successfully casted; neat PBI, PBI_PVP, PBI_Pd_1% and PBI_Pd_4% with average weight of 1.8g in similar sized petri dishes using dry phase inversion technique. All of the membranes were characterized using FE-SEM, FTIR-AR and EDX to detect any anomaly on the surface and cross section, chemical changes in the membrane structures and to detect the presence of Pd respectively. Permeation test was conducted on the membrane samples using pure H2, N2 and CO2 gases at 9 bar, 200 °C for 30 minutes each. The neat PBI has shown H2 permeation of 14.7 Barrer or 0.3 GPU. Among the four samples, surprisingly PBI_PVP has shown the best result with nearly 15x higher permeability at 225.0 Barrer or 4.8 GPU. For the MMM, both PBI_Pd_1% and PBI_Pd_4% membrane samples have exceed the neat membrane performance at 0.8 and 0.4 GPU respectively. Ideal selectivity of the membranes toward the tested gases were not able to be calculated due to flow meter limitation inhibit the reading for N2 and CO2 permeation. Generally, MMM has been proven to enhance the neat PBI membrane permeation.
