This part of BS 7217 provides the functional description of the Programmer's Hierarchical Interactive Graphics System (PHIGS). It defines: The logical structure, operations, and behavior** of PHIGS A standard application programming interface (API) for creating, manipulating, and displaying 2D and 3D graphical data The hierarchical structure of graphics using segment-based (structure-based) organization Methods for input/output, viewing, modelling, transformation, and interaction handling The standard is designed to ensure portability of graphics applications and interoperability between systems implementing PHIGS, particularly in CAD, CAM, and visualization systems.
