Pencemaran air yang disebabkan ion logam berat telah menjadi isu alam sekitar di seluruh dunia dalam zaman perindustrian yang pesat. Ion logam berat akan membahayakan kesihatan manusia melalui penyedutan, pemakanan dan pendedahan langsung dalam kepekatan yang tinggi. Oleh itu, penyingkiran ion logam berat amat diperlukan di kawasan tercemar sebelum ia dialirkan ke ekosistem yang besar. Dalam penyelidikan ini, potensi biojerapan menggunakan kulit bawang merah untuk menyingkirkan ion Pb(II) daripada larutan berair telah dikaji. Pencirian kulit bawang merah telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan FTIR, SEM dan EDX. Beberapa pengaruh utama kepada proses biojerapan seperti pH, muatan biopenjerap, kepekatan awal untuk ion Pb(II) dan masa sentuhan telah dikaji. Garis sesuhu penjerapan yang paling sesuai bagi ion Pb(II) juga telah ditentukan. Daripada eksperimen, kecekapan penyingkiran 98% ion Pb(II) telah diperolehi pada pH 6.0, muatan biopenjerap 1.5 g, kepekatan awal ion Pb(II) pada 100 mg/L dan 15 minit masa sentuhan. Garis sesuhu Langmuir telah memenuhi proses penjerapan menggunakan kulit bawang merah (R2 = 0.9978) dengan kapasiti maksimum penjerapan, qmax pada 38.3 mg/g dan pemalar Langmuir ialah 0.3 L/mg. Berdasarkan analisa FTIR, kumpulan berfungsi utama yang ada pada permukaan kulit bawang merah ialah kumpulan-kumpulan hidroksil, karboksil, alkil, alkenil dan alkinil. Imej SEM telah menunjukkan bahawa permukaan biopenjerap adalah licin sebelum proses biojerapan dan berubah menjadi berkedut, menunjukkan pemendapan ion Pb(II) pada permukaan kulit bawang merah selepas proses biojerapan. Kesimpulannya, kulit bawang merah berpotensi menjadi biopenjerap yang murah, cekap dan mesra alam dalam menyingkirkan ion logam berat daripada larutan berair. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water contaminated by the heavy metal ions has become a worldwide environmental issue in rapid industrialized century. Heavy metal ions are able to affect human health through inhalation, ingestion or direct exposure when it comes to high concentration. Therefore, heavy metal removal in contaminated water is a must before it is discharged to large ecosystems. In this study, the biosorption potential of red onion skin for removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was explored. Red onion skin was characterized by using FTIR, SEM and EDX. The influence of key parameters such as pH, biosorbent loading, initial concentration of Pb(II) ions and contact time was studied. The suitable adsorption isotherm for Pb(II) ions was also determined. Throughout the experiment, the optimum Pb(II) ions removal was obtained at pH of 6.0, biosorbent loading of 1.5 g, initial Pb(II) ions concentration at 100 mg/L and contact time of 15 minutes with removal efficiency of 98%. Biosorption of Pb(II) ions by red onion skin fitted better with Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9978) with the maximum adsorption capacity, qmax of 38.3 mg/g and Langmuir constant, b of 0.3 L/mg. Through FTIR analysis, the major functional groups present on red onion skin surface were hydroxyl, carboxyl, alkyl, alkenyl and alkynyl groups. SEM image showed that before biosorption with smooth surface while after biosorption gave wrinkled surface indicating the deposition of Pb(II) ions on the surface of red onion skin. In conclusion, red onion skin is a potential biosorbent that is cheap, efficient and eco-friendly for the removal of heavy metal ions from the aqueous solution.
