BS EN 31253:1996 is a European Standard for "Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 3-4: Examinations and measurements - Mode field diameter (MFD) measurement methods."
This standard defines the mode field diameter (MFD) measurement method for single-mode and multimode optical fibers. MFD is an important parameter that characterizes the size of the light-carrying core of an optical fiber and determines the coupling efficiency between optical fibers and components.
The standard specifies the equipment and methods required for conducting MFD measurements, including the use of a scanning microscope or a far-field method. It also provides guidelines for the interpretation of MFD measurement results.
BS EN 31253:1996 is intended for use by manufacturers and users of fiber optic components and interconnecting devices, as well as testing and calibration laboratories. It helps to ensure that MFD measurements are conducted consistently and accurately, which in turn improves the reliability and performance of fiber optic systems.
