Preparation of porous carbon from kenaf fibre for the adsorption of bisphenol A

Preparation of porous carbon from kenaf fibre for the adsorption of bisphenol A / Jamilah Abdullah
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The purpose of this studies was to optimize the preparation condition of porous carbon, activated carbon for the adsorption of Bisphenol A (BPA) and to establish the BPA adsorption in term of adsorption isotherm and kinetics. The precursor was 1 to 2 mm of kenaf fibre. The method to produce the activated carbon was pyrolysis using phosphoric acid, H3PO4 as activating agent. Kenaf was impregnated with different ratios of phosphoric acid and activated at 450 ℃ for 90 minutes. Kenaf activated carbon (KAC) was prepared with 5wt%, 10wt% and 15wt% of phosphoric acid and the best result will further used in the adsorption test. The best KAC for the screening is KAC with 15wt% of phosphoric acids which give the 96.6% of removal of BPA at 100 mg/L. In addition, the higher the concentration of BPA solution, the longer time needed to remove the BPA while the best operating temperature is 30 ℃. Lastly, the removal of BPA can be done in the solution at the pH 5 to 9.
