BS EN 61120-5:1996 is a European Standard that specifies the methods for the measurement of airborne sound insulation in buildings and building elements. The standard provides guidelines for measuring the sound insulation of walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and windows to ensure that the sound insulation meets the specified requirements.
Specifically, BS EN 61120-5:1996 specifies the following:
Test apparatus and procedures for measuring the sound insulation of building elements, including the sound source, receiving room, and measurement procedures
Requirements for the test environment, including the background noise levels and the acoustical characteristics of the receiving room
Test procedures for determining the sound reduction index (R) and the apparent sound reduction index (R') of building elements
Procedures for correcting the measured values for the influence of flanking transmission and other sources of measurement error
Reporting requirements, including the format of the test report and the information that should be included
The standard applies to various types of building elements, including walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and windows, and provides guidelines for their sound insulation performance evaluation. The standard aims to ensure that the sound insulation of building elements meets the specified requirements and that the building provides a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for its occupants.
