Pertumbuhan permintaan yang tinggi untuk menghasilkan pelbagai komponen komposit pada kos yang rendah dalam industry aeroangkasa telah membawa kepada perkembangan teknologi pembuatan luar-autoklaf. Kebiasaannya, bahagian-bahagian pesawat dibuat menggunakan bahan prepeg autoklaf melalui proses vakum beg dan pengawetan autoklaf. Perkembangan proses pra-membentuk melalui vakum beg dengan pengawetan ketuhar menggunakan bahan prepreg untuk mencapai kandungan udara terperangkap yang minimum tanpa sebarang tekanan luar yang tinggi seperti di dalam autoklaf telah terbukti merupakan cabran yang dahsyat. Telah menjadi kajian major untuk mengimbas kualiti bahan, proses dan praktis rekabentuk yang digunakan untuk menghasilkan struktur-struktur komposite tersebut. Oleh itu, tesis ini menekankan tentang kajian terhadap prestasi kualiti laminat komposit yang dihasilkan menggunakan kaedah vakum beg dan diawet menggunakan ketuhar. Panel-panel komposit laminat yang digunakan dalam kajian ini dibuat berdasarkan “Design of Experiment (DOE)”, suatu kaedah sistematik untuk merekabentuk eksperimen. Prestasi kualiti panel-panel komposit laminat yang dianalisa dalam kajian ini termasuklah analisis kualiti fizikal, analisis kandungan udara terperangkap dan analisis prestasi mekanikal. Analisis kualiti fizikal dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan imej ultrasonik C-imbasan dan imej mikroseksyen Alicona. Peratusan keabnormalan imej-imej dianalisa menggunakan algoritma yang dikod dalam perisian MATLAB. Sementara itu, penetuan kandungan udara terperangkap dilaksanakan menggunakan Ujian Penguraian Asid dan Ujian Pembakaran. Ujian kekuatan ricih dan ujian lenturan dilalakukan untuk mengkaji prestasi mekanikal komposit laminat yang diawet. Keputusan-keputusan daripada analisis-analis ini dianalisa lebih lanjut menggunakan kaedah analisis varian untuk menyiasat kesan-kesan utama dan interaksi antara faktor-faktor terhadap prestasi kualiti komposit laminat. Disimpulkan bahawa prestasi kualiti komposit laminat adalah berkait rapat antara satu sama lain. Kandungan udara terperangkap memberi pengaruh major dalam kualiti fizikal dan prestasi mekanikal komposit laminat. Walaubagaimanapun, peratusan kandungan udara terperangkap dalam panel-panel komposit dipengaruhi oleh parameter pemprosesan yang digunakan dalam pembuatan panel-panel tersebut. ______________________________________________________________________________________ The growing demands to produce various composite components at lower cost in the in the aerospace industries has lead to the development of the Out-of-Autoclave (OOA) manufacturing technology. Conventionally, the aircraft parts are manufactured using autoclave prepreg materials via the vacuum bagging process and autoclave cured. The development of the vacuum-bagging-only (VBO) pre-forming process with oven curing using the prepreg materials to achieve minimum void content without any high external pressure as such in the autoclave proved to be a great challenge. It has been a major study to review the quality of the materials, processes and design practices used to generate those composite structures. Therefore, this thesis emphasises on the experimental study on the quality performances of the cured composite laminates produced from the VBO-oven cured method. The composite laminate panels used in this study are manufactured based on the Design of Experiment (DOE), a systematic method of designing an experiment. The quality performances of the composite laminate panels that are analysed in this study involve the physical quality analysis, void content analysis and the mechanical performance analysis. The physical quality analysis is done using the ultrasonic C-scan image and the Alicona Microsectioning image. The abnormalities percentage of the images are analysed using the algorithm coded in the MATLAB software. Meanwhile, the determination of void content is conducted using the Acid Digestion Test and the Burn Off Test. The Inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) test and Flexural test are performed in order to study the mechanical performance of the cured composite laminates. The results from these analyses are further analysed using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) method to investigate the main effects and interactions between the factors towards the quality performance of the composite laminates. It is concluded that the quality performances of the composite laminates are much related to one another. The void content gives major influence in the physical quality and the mechanical performance of the composite laminates. However, the percentage of void content in the composite laminate panels is influenced by the processing parameters used in manufacturing the panels.
