Feasibility study of biopolymer for water shut-off treatment in oilfield industry

Feasibility study of biopolymer for water shut-off treatment in oilfield industry / Najaa Habib
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water shut-off treatment is used as a method to reduce the water production and simultaneously to increase oil production especially in the matured oil wells. In this thesis, gel polymer system consists of xanthan gum from xanthomonas cross-linked with chromium acetate was studied as water shut-off treatment. Volume ratios and concentrations of xanthan gum cross-linked with chromium acetate were tested to meet the design target of forming flowing gel (B) at third hour. Effect of various parameters that are salinity, temperature and different fluid factor were also studied. For salinity, 1 wt% up to 8 wt% of sodium chloride which is divalent cation were used. Gel polymers at different temperature ranging from 70°C to 100°C were studied. Diesel (oil) is used as the last parameter to see the effect upon gel polymer. Besides, gel strength was also determined by adding distilled water to the gel for long period of time. The results showed that volume ratio 5:1 (5 ml xanthan gum solution to 1 ml chromium acetate solution) is the best ratio whereas 0.35 wt% and 0.5 wt% of xanthan gum cross-linked with 0.1 wt% of chromium acetate are the best concentrations. The results also showed that increasing in temperature and presence of divalent cations (salinity) in the formation gel caused decreased in the gelation time. Flowing gel should be formed at longer time when in contact with oil than with no oil added. But, polymer gel in this research still form gel at third hour at high temperature (90 °C and 100 °C) even it is also in contact with oil (diesel). The gel formed is strong because gel did not expand even it was immersed in water for a long time.
