Removal of oil spill using low cost adsorbents empty fruit bunch rejected tea and rice husk / Khairunnisa’ Mohd Sani
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Oil spill removal has been recognized one of the most significant source of wastewater pollution which directly released into water bodies, resulting in various environmental impacts. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in natural sorbent production for oil spill removal. This type of adsorbents offer low cost, higher adsorption capacity and the most important thing is it is not harmful to humans and environment. In this study, 3 adsorbents have been introduced from empty fruit bunch, rejected tea and rice husk. Each of these adsorbents has been modified with Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrochloric Acid. Another parameter is the use of different types of water such as tap water, sea water and river water. The highest adsorption capacity of 4.00-6.00 (g/g) was found when oil was mix with sea water compared to the river water and tap water. The adsorption capacity was more than 50% with Vesoya oil and the adsorption capacity with used engine oil was 30%. Last but not least, the thickness of oil has been investigated where the highest adsorption capacity of (5.00-6.00 (g/g)) was obtained.
