Design of asymmetrical half-bridge converter as second stage of a led driver for street lighting application_Ting Siong Wei_E3_2013_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ Light Emitting Diode (LED) are widely used recently in variety of lighting application due to their high efficiency. For street lighting application, high power and high efficiency is needed to reduce the operating cost. Nominal voltage are usually supplied to LED to prevent overheat and damage of LED. One of the method to supply nominal voltage to LED is by using current limiting resistor, but this method cause high power dissipation at resistor which causes loss. Thus DC-DC converter is used to step down the voltage to supply nominal voltage to LEDs. In some LED drivers, isolation is needed in converter for safety purpose. Asymmetrical half bridge converter (AHB) is chosen to perform these task as it can achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) by using energy store in leakage inductance. But AHB converter is hard to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) at light load. This problem is solved by increasing the magnetising current during switching instant. The magnetising inductance of the transformer is reduced to perform this task. Another problem is the conduction loss and magnetising current should be reduced to overcome this problem. The magnetising current is reduced by using asymmetrical design of the transformer. In this project, AHB converter is designed using theoretical calculations. The circuit is then simulated and implemented on PCB. The waveform and functionality is analysed. ZVS is achieved and the circuit successfully supplies nominal voltage to the LED. Besides, the circuit has isolation between high voltage and low voltage side. Efficiency of 82.3% is recorded from the prototype. In conclusion, AHB converter is recommended to be used as a LED driver for street lighting application.
