Engineering properties and moisture sensitivity of warm mix asphalt incorporating surfactant based warm additive

Engineering properties and moisture sensitivity of warm mix asphalt incorporating surfactant based warm additive / Eng Yan Ta
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ With increasing concerns of excessive green gas emissions, concerted effort is made by the asphalt paving industry to decrease emissions by lowering the production temperatures of asphalt mixture without adversely affecting the mixtures properties. Numerous proprietary warm-mix technologies have been developed to achieve this aim. The main objective of this research is to investigate the effect of a new generation warm additive, ZycoTherm on the asphalt mixtures performance and binder properties. All warm mix specimens were prepared using 60//70 binder with the addition of 0.1% ZycoTherm. Laboratory evaluations were conducted on the binder properties in terms of penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity and rutting factor, G*/sin δ. The results showed that incorporation of ZycoTherm did not significantly affect the consistency of base binder. The ZycoTherm modified binder exhibited equivalent rutting resistance with conventional 60/70 binder. The compactability and workability were compared in terms of compactability energy index (CEI) and workability index (WI). Warm mix asphalt (WMA) showed better compactability and workability than hot mix asphalt (HMA). Meanwhile, asphalt mixtures performance were evaluated from the Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, resilient modulus, dynamic creep and Hamburg wheel tracking tests. ZycoTherm modified asphalt mixtures illustrated comparable performance with conventional HMA in terms of moisture damage and rutting resistance.
