Power generated by Photovoltaic systems is highly depends on environmental factors, such
as solar irradiance and atmospheric temperature that can affect the efficiency of the system.
The output power of solar energy is not constant with time because of the rainy and cloudy
condition. Therefore, the implementation of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
method able to prevent the problem. Many different methods can be used in this algorithm
for MPPT where Perturb and Observe (P&O) is used in this work because of its simplicity
and easy to be implemented. PV system requires DC-DC converter to achieve the maximum
output power of Solar panel because the output voltage of the PV panel needs to be locked
at the maximum power point (MPP) by an MPPT algorithm. The proposed research for this
project is to implement the MPPT 'Perturb and Observe’ algorithm in MATLAB function,
then design and simulate the MPPT ‘Perturb and Observe’ algorithm with DC-DC Buck,
Boost and Buck Boost converters and then the best converter will be integrated with the
battery energy stored system into Photovoltaic system. In steady-state analysis, the MPPT
P&O work best at high irradiance which the faster time response, higher MPP ratio and less
oscillation occurs, make the system more stable compared to the lower irradiance. At low
irradiance, there is almost 40% power loss in MPP ratio percentages. In Maximum Power
Point analysis, the boost converter shows the best performance in term of higher MPP ratio,
but Buck-Boost converter shows the ideal performance with the faster steady-state response
and less oscillation. With these results, Boost converter has presented it is suitable for
integrating in charging battery application as it shows better performance than Buck and
Buck-Boost converter.
