Investigation of the point angle to the wear of tool bits_Mohd Rushnikmat Akmar Ramli_A2_2012_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ This project involved investigation on the tool wear of carbon fiber reinforced plastic’s drill bit made up from carbide material based on the point angle and number of holes. The whole experiments utilized the L9 Taguchi orthogonal array on drilling the carbon fiber reinforced composite (CFRP) laminates. Nine experiments were conducted by using 118°, 126° and 130° point angles with each of the point angle drilling twenty, thirty and forty holes respectively. For each sets of hole, the drill bit with the respected point angle were examined under Alicona IFM. The Kistler dynamometer was used as the device to measure the thrust force during the drilling process. The maximum thrust force and wear rates will be used to determine the tool life for a specified drill type. Later, the tool life will be used to determine the optimum point angle. It was found out that the 118° point angle proves to be using the lowest thrust force and gives out the least damage to the CFRP panels. In addition, drill made from carbide materials promoted longer tools life compared to high speed steel material due to their hardness.
