BS EN 50163:1996 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for railway overhead contact line systems used for the collection of electric energy from the catenary to power trains.
The standard includes requirements for the design, construction, and maintenance of overhead contact line systems, as well as the components used in their construction, such as contact wires, supporting structures, insulators, and fittings.
The standard also specifies the electrical characteristics of overhead contact line systems, including the permissible values for the electrical parameters that affect the performance of the system, such as the maximum voltage drop along the line and the permissible short-circuit currents.
BS EN 50163:1996 is an older version of the standard, which has since been updated. The most recent version of the standard is BS EN 50163:2017, which includes updated requirements and test methods for railway overhead contact line systems.
