BS 7255:1989 sets out the code of practice for ensuring safety when working on lifts (elevators). It provides guidance to lift owners, employers, maintenance personnel, and contractors on safe procedures and responsibilities during lift installation, maintenance, inspection, testing, and repair.
Key elements included in the scope are:
General safety principles for working on or near lifts
Responsibilities of employers and workers, including training and competence
Access to lift machinery spaces, such as motor rooms and shafts
Electrical isolation and control to prevent accidental movement
Use of warning signs and barriers to prevent unauthorized access
Safe working practices during different types of lift work (e.g. pit work, shaft entry, car top work)
Emergency procedures and communication requirements
Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe use of tools
