Minyak mineral berasaskan petroleum telah lama digunakan dalam pengubah voltan tinggi sebagai bahan penebat cecair. Menurut penyelidikan minyak penebat baru-baru ini, minyak mesra alam sekitar berasaskan minyak sayur-sayuran (VBO) menjadi calon yang berpotensi setaraf dengan minyak mineral sebagai bahan untuk pengubah voltan tinggi. RBDPO telah menunjukkan potensi untuk digunakan sebagai cecair dielektrik. Penyelidikan meluas mengenai minyak pengubah bertujuan untuk meningkatkan daya tahan pecahan voltan dan ini termasuk aplikasi pecahan elektrik untuk kilat. Ciri-ciri pecahan voltan untuk kilat bagi minyak mineral dan VBO telah dikaji secara berasingan oleh penyelidik dalam beberapa dekad yang lalu, tetapi sehingga tahun kebelakangan ini, tidak ada lagi mana-mana kajian saintifik mengenai pecahan voltan kilat yang mencampurkan kedua-dua minyak mineral dan RBDPO. Projek ini memberi tumpuan kepada ciri-ciri pecahan voltan bagi pelbagai peratusan campuran antara minyak mineral dan RBDPO bawah kondisi sambaran kilat. Elektrod poin-plane yang digunakan dalam eksperimen ini adalah dengan jarak jurang 5mm. Hasil dari kajian ini, kesimpulan dibuat bahawa 100% minyak mineral mempunyai pecahan voltan lebih tinggi iaitu 48.2kV berbanding dengan 100% RBDPO iaitu 21.4kV. 80% MO/20 RBDPO%, 50% MO/20% dan 20% MO/80% RBDPO masing-masing menunjukkan hasil 36.7 kV, 26.9kV dan 29.8kV. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Petroleum-based mineral oil has been found to be useable in high voltage transformer as liquid insulating materials. On the basic research of recent insulating oil, environmental friendly oil such as vegetable-based oil (VBO) have become a potential candidates along with mineral oil as insulating material for power transformer. As matter of fact; Refined, Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) has shown the potential to be used as a dielectric fluid. Extensive research of transformer oil was aimed at improving electrical breakdown; and this included lightning breakdown applications. Lightning breakdown characteristic of mineral oil and VBO has been done separately by researchers in past decades, but until recent years, there is not yet any scientific research regarding lightning breakdown characteristic of mixture between both mineral oil and RBDPO. This project focuses on the breakdown characteristic of various mixture percentages between mineral oil and RBDPO under lightning impulse condition. Point-plane electrode is used in this experiment with the gap distances of 5mm. The results from this research conclude that the 100% mineral oil has relatively higher impulse breakdown voltage of 48.2kV compare with 100% RBDPO of 21.4kV. The 80% MO/20% RBDPO, 50% MO/20% RBDPO and 20% MO/80% RBDPO shows result of 36.7kV, 26.9kV and 29.8 kV respectively.
