Fiber rong kelapa sawit merupakan salah satu sisa daripada pemprosesan minyak kelapa sawit yang mempunyai potensi sebagai bahan untuk penghasilan etanol selulosa. PPF diperolehi daripada kilang United Oil Palm (M) Sdn Bhd. mengandungi 35.02% lignin dan 46.305% selulosa. Dalam kajian ini, pra-rawatan dengan pelarut organik telah dijalankan untuk melignifikasikan PPF bagi menghasilkan selulosa yang lebih mudah digunapakai semasa proses sakarifikasi enzimatik. Berbanding dengan etilena glikol, polietilene glikol, gliserin dan metanol, etanol didapati lebih berkesan untuk menguraikan lignin dan menghasilkan selulosa yang lebih mudah digunapakai. Penambahan 2 molar asid nitrik sebagai pemangkin dapat mengningkatkan penyerapan lignin dan penguraian lignin sebanyak 46.0451%. Eksperimen seterusnya dilakukan dengan menggunakan Statistik Rekabentuk Eksperimen bagi meninjau kesan parameter-parameter prarawatan: suhu reaksi (170-190oC), kepekatan pelarut (50-80%), dan nisbah pemangkin kepada PPF (0.50-1.20 %w/w Keadaan optimum yang dicadangkan untuk maksimum penghapusan lignin, pemulihan selulosa dan penukaran selulosa kepada glukosa daripada PPF adalah pada suhu 188.04oC, 0.61% kepekatan pelarut dan 0.94% w/w nisbah pemangkin kepada PPF. Titik optimum ini diulang sebanyak 5 kali dan didapati keputusan yang diperolehi adalah dekat dengan hasil estimasi yang diberikan oleh analisis pengoptimuman berangka dengan hanya kesalahan kecil. Kesalahan rata-rata untuk penghapusan lignin (%), pemuliharaan selulosa (%) dan penukaran selulosa kepada glukosa (%), masing-masing adalah -0.7046, 0.0682 dan -4.4738. Hal ini menunjukkan hasil pengoptimuman proses pra-rawatan PPF dengan EtOH/HNO3 adalah boleh dipercayai. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Palm pressed pericarp fiber or pressed palm fiber (PPF) is one of the oil palm residues that have great potential as feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production. PPF obtained from the United Oil Palm (M) Sdn Bhd possessed with 35.02% lignin and 46.305% cellulose. In this study, organosolvent pretreatment have been employed for delignification of PPF in order to make the cellulose more accessible to enzymatic saccharification into fermentable sugar. Ethanol was found to provide better removal of lignin and production of more accessible cellulose as compared to ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, glycerol and methanol. Addition of 2M acid nitric (HNO3) served as catalyst to promote nitration of lignin and improve the lignin removal up to 46.0451%. The subsequent experiment was carried out using statistical design of experiments (DoE) to study the effect of pretreatment parameters on the hydrolysis of PPF: reaction temperature (170-190oC), solvent concentration (5080 %), and catalyst to PPF ratio (0.50-1.20 %w/w). The suggested optimum condition for maximum lignin removal (%), cellulose retained (%), and cellulose to glucose conversion (%) from PPF are at temperature 188.04oC, solvent concentration 61% and catalyst to PPF ratio 0.94 %w/w. This optimum point was repeated 5 times and the results obtained gave average error of -0.7046, -0.0682 and -4.4738, for lignin removal (%), cellulose retained (%) and cellulose to glucose conversion (%), respectively. The results showed that the optimization study for PPF pretreatment with EtOH/HNO3 is reliable.
