Penapisan tebing sungai (RBF) mampu meningkatkan kualiti air sebelum ianya masuk ke dalam loji rawatan. Dalam kajian RBF yang sedang berjalan sekarang, suatu telaga pam telah dibina di tebing Sungai Perak, di Kuala Kangsar. Teknologi RBF dianggap lestari kerana ia melibatkan penapisan semula jadi dan mengurangkan penggunaan bahan kimia dalam proses rawatan. Kerja-kerja yang dinyatakan dalam disertasi ini memberi tumpuan kepada pencirian sifat tanah di lapisan skrin terutamanya yang melibatkan kebolehtelapan media pasir pada arah mendatar dan menegak yang menjejaskan kecekapan proses RBF. Matlamat utama laporan adalah untuk membandingkan kebolehtelapan mendatar dengan kebolehtelapan menegak bagi media penapisan. Antara ciri-ciri tanah ditentukan adalah taburan saiz butiran, kebolehtelapan, dan ketumpatan kering. Nilai D10 didapati 0.33mm, D30 didapati 0.55mm, dan D60 didapati 0.85mm. Pekali kebolehtelapan mendatar didapati berjulat diantara 8,1686 cm/s hingga 0,3448 cm/s bagi ketumpatan kering sepadan yang berjulat diantara 1486.96 kg/m3 dan 1650.58 kg/m3. Pekali kebolehtelapan menegak didapati berjulat diantara 0.1431 cm/s hingga 0.0846 cm/s bagi ketumpatan kering sepadan yang berjulat diantara 1443.66 kg/m3 dan 1640.62 kg/m3. Oleh itu pekali kebolehtelapan mendatar didapati 4 hingga 57 kali lebih tinggi daripada kebolehtelapan menegak dengan nilai yang lebih tinggi direkodkan untuk pasir yang lebih rendah pemadatannya. Nilai kebolehpindahan tanah untuk sistem RBF, yang diukur dari dua pengukuran makmal dua dimensi, yang kebanyakannya bergantung kepada nilai kebolehtelapan mendatar berjumlah diantara 5.2051 cm2/s dan 46.9697 cm2/s. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ River bank filtration (RBF) is capable of enhancing water quality before it enters into a water treatment plant. In an ongoing river bank filtration RBF study, a pumping well has been constructed on the bank of Perak River in Kuala Kangsar. RBF technology is considered sustainable since it involves natural filtration and uses less chemical in the treatment process. The work described in this dissertation has focused on the characterization of soil properties around the screen layer particularly on the permeability of the sand media in the horizontal and vertical directions which affect RBF efficiency the most. Thus the main aim was to compare horizontal permeability against vertical permeability of filtration media. Among soil properties determined were grain size distribution, permeability, and dry density. The value of D10 was found 0.33mm, D30 was 0.55mm, and D60 was 0.85mm. The horizontal permeability coefficient was found ranged from 8.1686 cm/s to 0.3448 cm/s with the corresponding soil dry density ranged between 1486.957 kg/m3 and 1650.58 kg/m3. The vertical permeability coefficient was found ranged from 0.1431 cm/s to 0.0846 cm/s with the corresponding soil dry density ranged between 1443.66 kg/m3 and 1640.62 kg/m3. Thus the horizontal permeability coefficient was found between 4 to 57 times higher than the vertical permeability with the higher figure corresponding to sand media with lesser compaction. The transmissivity of the soil for the RBF system, as measured from the two dimesional the lab apparatus, was therefore have come from mostly the horizontal permeability and amounted to between 5.2051 cm2/s and 46.9697 cm2/s.
