stirenasulfonat. MWCNTs tersebut telah disifatkan oleh Mikroskopi Elektron
Penskanan dengan Mikroanalisis X-ray (SEM & EDX), Spektroskopi Inframerah
Transformasi Fourier (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) luas permukaan,
biodiesel.

Sulphate groups were grafted onto the surface of multiwalled carbon
nanotubes catalysts (MWCNTs) to functionalize MWCNTs for producing biodiesel
from coconut oil by in situ polymerization of 4-styrenesulfonate. The resultant
sulfonated MWCNTs were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Xray
Microanalysis (SEM & EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR),
Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, Temperature-programmed Desorption
(TPD) and Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) Spectroscopy. The sulfonated MWCNTs
show stable and high dispersibility. The transesterification reaction of coconut oil
was carried out in a pressurized reactor at the following conditions: reaction
temperature of 170ºC, reaction period of 4 hours, methanol to oil ratio of 20, and
catalyst loading of 2 wt.%. The catalyst showed high catalytic performance in
biodiesel production with the conversion of 62.38 %. Based on the findings in this
research project, the sulfonated MWCNTs seem to have a potential to be a
breakthrough technology in the biodiesel industry.
