Functionalization of carbon nanotubes using acid treatment method

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes using acid treatment method / Lau Boon Key
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The introduction of carboxyl groups on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) surfaces by using acid treatment method are useful further modification of CNTs and can increase the sorption as well as ion exchange capacity of CNTs. In this project, the effect of concentration of nitric acid and sulfuric acid (HNO3/H2SO4) mixture and acid treatment time on the acid groups concentration of functionalized CNTs were studied. Acid treatment was performed by impregnating CNTs in HNO3/H2SO4 mixture (1:3 volume/volume) at different concentration (4M and 7M) for different duration of time (2, 4, 8 and 24 hours). After the functionalization of CNTs using acid treatment, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy (FT-IR) and acid-base titration characterizations were carried out to determine the surface acidic functional groups on CNTs qualitatively and quantitatively, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization was done to examine the structure and purity of functionalized CNTs. It has been demonstrated that the acid groups concentration on the CNTs increases by increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid and acid treatment time. Besides, the further functionalization of oxidized CNTs with cerium oxide (CeO2) is done. In short, the CNTs functionalized by 7M HNO3:7M H2SO4 for 24 hours has the highest value of acid groups concentration, which is 3.67 mmol/gCNT. Nevertheless, the acid treatment of CNTs does not break the structure of CNTs.
