BS EN 60521:1995 is a European standard that specifies the methods for testing the resistance of electrical insulating materials to heat. The standard applies to solid electrical insulating materials, such as plastics, resins, and varnishes, that are used in electrical equipment and components.
The standard provides guidance on the selection of test specimens and the testing equipment, as well as the test procedures and conditions. It includes several test methods, such as the heat deflection test, the temperature index test, and the comparative tracking index test.
The results of the tests can be used to determine the maximum temperature at which the insulating material can be used safely in electrical equipment, as well as its resistance to tracking and erosion under high voltage conditions.
It is important to note that this standard has been superseded by the updated version, EN 60695-2-10:2014. This newer version includes additional test methods and updated requirements to reflect advances in technology and changes in industry practices.
