Development of process model for isoamyl acetate synthesis in microreactor using nonlinear system identification method

Development of process model for isoamyl acetate synthesis in microreactor using nonlinear system identification method / Lim Sin Yen
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ester is very useful organic compound that has wide variety of applications in industry and domestic sector. Since isoamyl acetate demand is high in the market due to its banana-like flavour and physical properties that enable it to be used widely in industry, it has encouraged researchers to study the synthesis of isoamyl acetate. Nowadays, continuous process based on microreactor technology has been given a great focus in (bio) chemical processes as they offer a less wasteful process compare to the traditional methods and provide unprecedented reaction control. The objective of this study is to develop a process model of isoamyl acetate synthesis that can be used in developing a full automation of microreactor in the future. Before a process model can be developed, sensitivity analysis is required to determine the most sensitive parameter that infers to the ester yield. This is because yield cannot be measured ‘online’. Based on the sensitivity analysis, acyl donor versus alcohol (Ac/Al) ratio is determined as the most influencing parameter and it is used as a controlled variable in the process model development. Process model development was carried out by using nonlinear system identification method. In this modelling, Nonlinear Hammerstein-Weiner model with 2 types of nonlinearity method, wavelet network and piecewise linear were studied by using system identification tool in MATLAB. Based on the best fit (BF) percentage from both models, it shows that wavelet network model produced a better model which gave a BF of 97.65% compare to piecewise linear which gave only 94.52%. In the validation by using other input, wavelet network model gives a higher BF of 84.43%, hence, it was chosen as the model that are able to represent the process of isoamyl acetate synthesis.
