_____________________________________________________________________________________ Among rechargeable batteries, NiCd remains a popular choice for applications such as two way radios, emergency medical equipment, professional video cameras and power tools. Over 50 percent of all rechargeable batteries for portable equipment are NiCd. However, many battery chargers do not provide efficient and reliable charging cycle. Charger without termination control unit would damage batteries and subsequently shorten their lifetime. In order to cope with this, a microcontroller-based Fast Battery Charger for Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) batteries and battery-packs are introduced. The control and supervision of the whole process is entrusted by a microcontroller as well. The use of a microcontroller has been considered in order to simplify the hardware required (only a few external components are used), and provide a powerful and intelligent tool to undertake, through the programmed algorithm, complex tasks. The charger is working in such way that a high constant current is pumped into the battery. Commonly used fast-charge current is 1.2A for capacity 1300mAh for AA size battery while 0.6A for capacity 650mAh for AAA size battery. In order to make the charger universal, two current of 1.2A and 0.6A for AA and AAA size battery respectively are chose in designing the charger. With this specification, it is suitable for automatically charging a wide range of batteries with different capacities.
