The evaluation of wind energy potential at the school of electrical and electronic / Che Hafiz Jufri Jahaya
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This project study wind energy potential at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SEEE). Hourly wind speed data are obtained from the Malaysian Meteorology Department (MMD) for the year 2013 from the collection venue at Bayan Lepas (latitude 5° 10’ 11.7” N, longitudes 100° 28’ 44.7” E). SEEE is located at Nibong Tebal about 42 km from the MMD collection venue. Measured voltage and current data at SEEE are also collected from the power laboratory for the month of April 2015 to calculate wind speed. The data from MMD is statistically analyzed using both the Weibull and Rayleigh distributions. Both distributions are investigated to give an overview of the wind characteristic at SEEE. Two models of wind turbine, Honeywell WT6500 and 2 kW wind generator are investigated to determine the potential of wind energy generation. It is found that the annual mean wind speed in SEEE is 1.9 ms-1 and the wind direction is prevailing from north (N), northwest (NW) and south (S) directions. The annual actual mean wind power density (WPD) is 17.13 Wm-2, while the annual actual mean wind energy density (WED) are 613.09 kWh and 543.08 kWh from the two models of wind turbines by using same value from annual mean WPD. The site falls under Class 1 of the International System Wind Classification indicating that small scale wind turbine generators (0 – 200 Wm-2) have potential in USM Engineering Campus.
