Measuring the influence of parking lot surface temperature on urban heat island using combined technique of thermal imaging and GIS / Syazwani Zahari
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This final year research project studies the surface temperature variations of the parking lots with different types of surfaces in the Engineering Campus of USM. A comprehensive survey was carried out to measure the radiant temperature of parking lots using Infrared Camera (FLUKE TiR-11070514). The camera records the measured temperature in a SIM card and later transferred to a computer for processing and display using SmartView® 3.11 TIR software. In the data collection, each study area is categorized based on three significant temperature criteria i.e. parking lots with tree shaded area, half tree shaded area and open area. Three different parking locations were chosen in the surface temperature measurements and were conducted over a period of 1 month. This includes weekdays and weekends at three different time periods i.e. morning, afternoon and evening. The data were subsequently processed and spatially interpolated in GIS-IDRISI Selva Version 17 software to produce surface maps that represent average temperature of parking lots in USM Engineering Campus. Other than that, the average parking lot surface temperature graph was also produced for each different location. From the resulting interpolated surface temperature map, the highest and lowest temperatures of parking lots were determined. The variation of the surface temperature and their effects to Urban Heat Island (UHI) are being discussed. The outcome of this project may provide the opportunity to USM communities to know the parking lot temperature at specific time and also help in proposing action plans to mitigate the negative effects of UHIs in the future.
