Tenaga angin ialah satu sumber yang bersih dan tidak terhad yang mempunyai potensi untuk menangani pemanasan global yang amat serius pada hari ini. Kincir angin boleh dicategorikan kepada dua jenis iaitu, kincir angina paksi mendatar dan kincir angin paksi menegak. Kincir angin paksi menegak pula boleh dicategorikan kepada tiga jenis iaitu, Darrieus, Giromill dan Savonius. Objektif utama projek ini adalah untuk reka bentuk dan memperkembangkan satu prototaip kincir angin jenis Savonius yang berscala kecil. PVC paip telah digunakan untuk membina dua bilah turbin yang berbentuk separuh bulatan. Penjana arus terus telah digunakan untuk menukar tenaga mekanik kepada tenaga elektrik. Putaran kincir angin per minit, voltan pengeluaran, arus pengeluaran, kuasa pengeluaran dan kecekapan meningkat apabila kelajuan angin yang melalui kincir angin meningkat. Prestasi kincir angin jenis Savonius terjejas apabila diuji di luar akibat pergolakan angin. Secara keseluruhanya, kincir angin jenis Savonius mempunyai kebolehan untuk berputar tanpa sumber lain dan boleh terus berpusing kalau kelajuan angin melebihi 2m/s. Kincir angin yang dibangunkan telah menjana kuasa pengeluaran sebanyak 0.0795W apabila kelajuan angin ialah 3.5m/s. Walaupun kincir angin ini berjaya menjana kuasa pengeluaran tetapi nilai kuasa pengeluarannya agak rendah. Ini adalah sebab, kuasa input daripada kipas elektrik rendah. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Wind energy is a clean and inexhaustible energy source that has the potential to fight global warming which is very relevant today. Wind turbines can be categorized into two major types, horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine. Vertical axis wind turbine can be further classified into three categories, Darrieus, Giromill, and Savonius wind turbines. The primary objective of this project is to design and develop a small-scale Savonius wind turbine. A two-bladed semicircular turbine blade are designed and built using PVC pipes. A direct current generator is used to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. Rotation of wind turbine per minute, output voltage, output current, output power, and efficiency increase when the wind speed flows through the wind turbine increases. The performance of the Savonius wind turbine is affected by turbulence when tested outdoors. Savonius wind turbines are able to self-start and rotate continuously when the wind speed is above 2m/s. The wind turbine generated an output power of 0.0795W when the approaching wind speed is 3.5m/s. Although the wind turbine is able to generate an output power, it was quite low. This is because the input power of the electric fan is low.
