Design and development of an automatic cricket bowling machine using a rotating wheel_Fernandez Dhanaraj_E3_2014_NI
_____________________________________________________________________________________ In Malaysia, cricket bowling manufacturers are not available. Most of the bowling machines for cricket has to be bought from overseas. A cricket bowling machine is an important tool for cricket players to practice especially the batsman. While having a cricket bowler during the practice session of the batsman is an option, sometimes they require repetition of consistent ball speed, spin, and trajectory. Real bowlers cannot achieve such accuracy in repetition as they are not machines and can be subjected to tiredness and boredom. Thus, the purpose of this project is to design and develop an automatic cricket bowling machine using a rotating wheel. The machine uses a single rotating wheel as the ball shooting mechanism for simplicity and practicability. The prototype machine developed uses two switches to operate the dc motor through the Arduino Uno microcontroller board and the dc motor driver. The automation aspect of the prototype machine is the ball loading mechanism which is operated by the servomotor via a specific time delay. The prototype had undergone a series of tests such as current drawn when the ball was shot out, the initial velocity of the ball after each shot, the distance travelled by the ball and etc. The estimated maximum distance travelled by the ball at a height of 2 m at the rated speed of the motor was 5.01 m with an estimated initial velocity of 7.83 m/s. The tests were done at speeds below the rated speed of the dc motor which is 2600 rpm. The data were tabulated and the corresponding graphs were drawn to obtain equations used for the estimated values. One of the main problems of the prototype machine is vibration due to several factors such as poor rigidity.
