Sistem terbenam dilaksanakan secara meluas pada masa kini dan sistem ini sentiasa digunakan dalam kehidupan seharian kita. Sebagai contoh, sistem terbenam digunakan sebagai alat navigasi seperti sistem global kedudukan (GPS) dan mesin pengeluaran wang automatik (ATM). Sistem terbenam perlu menerima tugasan dalam tempoh yang tertentu untuk memastikan kelancaran operasi sistem dan perkhidmatan yang berkualiti tinggi boleh disediakan. Bagi aplikasi kritikal masa, sistem masa nyata terbenam akan menyebabkan kegagalan yang serius jika input kawalan sistem ini tidak dikemaskini dalam tempoh tertentu. Protokol-protokol komunikasi dapat menyelesaikan masalah komunikasi tetapi protokol ini berharga tinggi dan tidak mudah didapati. Oleh itu, Ethernet dicadangkan sebagai arah penyelidikan untuk pembangunan sistem komunikasi masa nyata terbenam yang berharga rendah dan berketentuan. Ini adalah disebabkan Ethernet mempunyai ciri-ciri seperti kadar pemindahan data yang tinggi, berharga rendah, dan tidak dimiliki oleh sesiapa. Dalam projek ini, sistem komunikasi masa nyata terbenam telah direkabentuk dengan teknologi Ethernet dan papan ‘Field Programmable Gate Array’ (FPGA). Prestasi daripada sistem komunikasi terbenam yang dilaksanakan dengan suis rangkaian dan hab rangkaian telah dinilai dalam keadaan rangkaian komunikasi yang sibuk. Keputusan yang diperolehi daripada eksperimen yang dijalankan menunjukkan bahawa sistem yang dicadangkan dapat menyediakan penyelesaian rangkaian yang cepat dan berketentuan apabila sistem ini dilaksanakan dengan suis rangkaian. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat beberapa batasan dalam sistem ini yang boleh menjejaskan ketepatan pengukuran data. Kesimpulannya, proses perbaikan dan peningkatan perlu dijalankan untuk menyelesaikan batasan-batasan tertentu dan meningkatkan ketepatan sistem pengukuran data. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Embedded system is widely implemented in the world today and this system is used in our daily life. For example, embedded systems are used in navigation tools like global positioning system (GPS) and the automated teller machines (ATMs) in bank. Most of the embedded systems are bound to real-time constrains and its quality of service is dependent on these time constraints. Embedded system has to receive their tasks within a specific deadline to ensure smooth operation of system and high quality of services can be provided. For time-critical application, the real-time embedded system can cause catastrophic events if their control input is not updated before the deadline is reached. Fieldbus communication protocols are able to solve the communication problem but these protocols are expensive and not easily available. Hence, Ethernet is proposed as the research direction for the development of low cost and deterministic embedded real-time communication system because Ethernet possesses characteristics of high data transfer rate, expendability and non-proprietary. In this project, an embedded real-time communication system was developed with the implementation of Ethernet technology on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) development board. The performance of the system was evaluated with the implementation of network switch and network hub under the condition of busy communication network. The result obtained from the experiments conducted showed that proposed system was able to provide a fast and deterministic network solution when it is implemented with network switch. However, there are some limitations in this system which may affect the accuracy of data measurement. As a conclusion, more refinements and enhancements are needed in order to resolve the limitations and improve the accuracy of data measurement system.
