Magnetophoretic separation ofmicroalgae by magnetite maghemite colloid_Selah Anak Jalak_K4_2011_875003827_NI
Kaedah “grafting to” didapati telah memisahkan alga C. vulgaris lebih efektif berbanding kaedah “grafting from”. ___________________________________________________________________________________ In this study, the surface charge and the growth curve of C. vulgaris was measured to determine the suitable day to harvest these microalgae. Surface charge of C. vulgaris was measured in term of its electrophoretic mobility using Zetasizer Nano Series while the concentration of C. vulgaris was measured using UV-VIS Spectrophotometer. By taking account both the surface charge properties and the growth curve properties of these microalgae, the best day to harvest it was determined to be at day 10. C. vulgaris was then harvested using ‘grafting to’ and ‘grafting from’ method of colloid particles with polydiallyldimethylammonium, PDDA as a polymer. PDDA polymers with the lowest molecular weight favor the separation process the most. ‘Grafting to’ technique was found to be separating C. vulgaris more effectively compared to ‘grafting from’ technique. The shape of the colloid particles also affects the efficiency of this colloid to separate the C. vulgaris. Colloid particles with rod shape type gives more efficient separation of C. vulgaris compared to sphere shape.
