_________________________________________________________________________________________ The brushless DC motor (BLDC) system is emerging as one of the most useful drive options for a wide range of applications. BLDC motors become popular recently due to its efficiency, cost, and power/torque capabilities. However, BLDC motor system has faced many hurdles to come to its present stage in terms of cost, torque ripples, noise, vibrations, reduced reliability due to the large number of components, operational constraints such as temperature rise and other constraints. Continuous efforts have been made to overcome these problems on different aspects of this drive. This thesis presents the design and prototype of a low cost power electronic converter for permanent magnet brushless DC motor by using an integrated 3-phase inverter IRAMS10UP60B and low cost microcontroller PIC16F737. A control strategy has been developed to run the BLDC motor smoothly and less noisily. The BLDC motor drive system is also equipped with over current, over temperature and fault protection features. Besides, the speed and direction of motor can be controlled. In order improve the time respond on ON/OFF a particular IGBT pair corresponding to changing of Hall signals, interrupt method has been utilized in programming. The testing of the project has been carried out in a series of stages before testing on the whole project. Quantitative and qualitative data have been collected from the testing and analyzed for result comparison and validation. The results show that the built prototype has been able to successfully drive the BLDC motor. As a conclusion, low cost BLDC motor drives can be developed by using IRAM10UP60B and PIC16F737.
