Kajian ini adalah untuk menyelidik keberkesanan satu kombinasi baru lapisan tanah untuk penutupan tapak pelupusan bagi mengelakkan air hujan meresap ke dalam bahan buangan dan menggunakan tanah laterit sebagai peutup lapisan atas dan pasir sebagai lapisan bawah. Tapak pelupusan ini terletak di Muassim, Makkah, Arab Saudi sementara ujian makmal dijalankan jauh dari tapak pelupusan, iaitu di Malaysia. Kajian ini dilaksanakan untuk melihat keberkesanan penutup tapak pelupusan yang sedia ada sekiranya menggunakan tanah laterit sebagai lapisan atas dan pasir sebagai lapisan bawah. Sampel pasir telah disediakan untuk menyamai pasir penutup yang wujud di Muassim dan tanah laterit diandaikan untuk diletakkan di atas pasir. Tanah laterit telah diuji untuk klasifikasinya dan symbol kumpulan dan mendapati jenis tanah laterit ialah lempung berkelodak (SW-SC). Satu kajian sebelumnya telah mengandaikan hanya menggunakan pasir sebagai penutup tapak pelupusan. Aplikasi baru dengan menggunakan tanah laterit telah membuktikan satu peningkatan kualiti dalam penutupan tapak pelupusan. Pelbagai ketebalan tanah laterit telah diuji dalam lajur perspeks lutsinar dan air hujan yang digunakan dituang ke dalam perspeks, bersamaan dengan setahun hujan di Muassim, Makkah, Arab Saudi. Satu bekas diletakkan di bawah lajur untuk mengumpul air sekiranya terjadi sebarang penembusan air. Setiap eksperimen dibenarkan dijalankan selama 24 jam dan data yang diambil ialah masa penembusan air jatuh, masa untuk air basah di keseluruhan lapisan tanah dan jumlah air yang dikumpul. Ketebalan lapisan tanah laterit berubah dari 20 mm sehingga lebih dari 100 mm dan setiap penambahan tanah ialah sebanyak 20 mm. Ketebalan lapisan pasir telah ditetapkan sebanyak 400 mm. keputusan menyarankan ketebalan 100 mm untuk tanah laterit dan 400 mm lapisan pasir adalah amat sesuai untuk menahan 112 mm air hujan dan menghalang air dari meresap masuk ke dalam sisa buangan. ___________________________________________________________________________________ This study investigates the effectiveness of a new combination of soil layers for landfill cover in protecting waste body against rainfall infiltration by using laterite soil as top layer and sandy soil as bottom layer. The landfill is situated at Muassim, Makkah, Saudi Arabia, while laboratory tests were conducted away from site in Malaysia. This study was undertaken to see if by using laterite soil as top soil layer and sandy soil below it could make an effective cover for the existing landfill. The model sands were prepared to match the existing cover sand of Muassim and laterite soil was assumed to be laid on top of the sand. The laterite was tested for its classification and group symbol and found to be silty clay (SW-SC). A previous research had assumed sand soils alone as cover for the site. The application of a new laterite layer has shown an improvement of the capping quality. Various thicknesses of laterite soil were tested in transparent Perspex column with water applied on top of each column equivalent to a year of rainfall in Muassim, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. A container was placed below the column to collect water if there was any breakthrough occurred. Each experiment was allowed to run for 24 hours and the data collected were breakthrough time, time for water to completely penetrate the layers and the volume of water collected. The thickness of laterite soil was varied from 20 mm to more than 100 mm and each increment being 20 mm. The thickness of sand layer was kept constant at 400 mm. The results suggested a thickness of 100 mm for laterite soils with an underlying 400 mm thick of sand is adequate to hold the 112 mm of rainfall and prevent water from infiltrate into the waste body.
