BS EN 50199:1996 is a European standard for "Methods of measurement of touch current and protective conductor current". It specifies the methods of measurement of touch current and protective conductor current that are relevant to electrical equipment and installations.
Touch current is the current that flows through a person who touches an exposed conductive part of an electrical device, while protective conductor current is the current that flows through a protective conductor (PE) under fault conditions.
The standard provides guidance on how to measure touch current and protective conductor current using different measurement techniques, including direct measurement, indirect measurement, and simulation. It also provides information on the appropriate measuring equipment and procedures.
BS EN 50199:1996 is applicable to all electrical equipment and installations where the possibility of touch current and protective conductor current exists, such as household appliances, power tools, and electrical installations in buildings. The standard helps to ensure the safety of persons who use or come into contact with electrical equipment and installations.
