Removal of copper ion by acid treated chicken feather

Removal of copper ion by acid treated chicken feather / Sathiya Seelan Nahandiran
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The optimization of copper (II) ion removal by pretreated chicken feathers using One Factor at A Time (OFAT) method and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) methods were investigated. In OFAT method, the effect of pH (5-9), initial metal concentration (100 mg/l – 900 mg/l), biomass loading (2g-6g) and temperature (32oC-40oC) for removal of Cu(II) ions was studied. The highest percentage of copper removal was achieved at pH 8, initial metal concentration of 100 mg/l, biomass loading of 3g and at temperature of 36oC. RSM method showed that the linear and quadratic terms of these four independent variables had significant effect towards the percentage of Cu(II) ions removal. RSM also gave the same optimal conditions and the percentage of copper (II) removal was at 92.30%. This means that RSM had predicted a higher Cu(II) ion removal compared to OFAT method. The kinetic studies for Cu(II) ion removal by pretreated chicken feather were carried out at different concentration in a batch system. Cu (II) ion removal best fits the pseudo-second order model.
