Negara tropika adalah negara yang terletak dalam kawasan Khatulistiwa bumi contohnya seperti negara Taiwan, Thailand dan Malaysia. Negara tropika mempunyai musim panas dan musim hujan sepanjang tahun. Pada masa kini, isu berbangkit dalam setiap negara ialah mengenai peningkatan sisa pepejal perbandaran. Buat masa sekarang, pengurusan sisa buangan di Malaysia adalah menggunakan kaedah pembuangan sampah melalui kaedah tanah timbus tetapi kaedah ini tidak sesuai digunakan lagi kerana tapak pembuangan sampah semakin terhad. Kaedah yang lain untuk sisa sampah ini adalah dengan mengunakan insinerator dan kaedah ini telah pun dipraktikkan di Malaysia. Kaedah insinerator mengikut konsep perubahan sisa buangan kepada tenaga dimana semua sisa buangan ini dibakar, haba terhasil daripada proses pembakaran itu boleh digunakan untuk menghasilkan tenaga yang dapat menjana elektrik. Walaubagaimanapun, terdapat beberapa insinerator di dalam Malaysia yang menghadapi masalah dalam operasi kerana kandungan air dalam sisa buangan tinggi. Kandungan air dalam sisa buangan berkait rapat dengan keadaan cuaca sekeliling. Didalam projek ini sisa pepejal perbandaran yang dikumpul dari kawasan sekitar Kampus Kejuruteraan, Universiti Sains Malaysia telah dibakar menggunakan pembakaran lapisan tetap berskala loji-pandu. Suhu serombong gas yang keluar telah diperhatikan dan dikaji untuk penukaran tenaga. Suhu-suhu tersebut telah digunakan dalam model matematik penjana stim pemulihan haba untuk mengira kadar penjanaan stim dan kuasa. Keputusan menunjukkan bahawa prestasi penjanaan stim dan kuasa terhasil lebih baik jika menggunakan sisa buangan yang mempunyai kandungan air yang rendah. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tropical countries are country that located at the equator region of the earth for example, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. Tropical countries have sunny days and raining day throughout the years. Nowadays, issue that have been highlight in every country is increasing in generation of municipal solid waste (MSW). At present, Malaysian waste management method is through landfill method but this method is not suitable anymore because of limited land site. Another option to treat the waste is by using incinerator and this method is already being practice in Malaysia. Incineration method follows waste to energy (WtE) concept where all the waste is combusted and the heat from combustion can be used to produce energy to generate electricity. However, some of the incinerators in Malaysia facing problem in the operation due to high moisture content in waste. Moisture content in the waste is related with weather condition in surrounding. In this project the MSW collected from nearby area of Engineering Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia was combusted in a pilot plant scale fixed bed combustor. The outlet flue gas was observed and being studied for energy conversion. The flue gas temperatures were used for mathematical model of heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) to calculate steam generation rate and power production. Result show better performance of steam generation rate and power production for waste with low moisture content.
