Investigation of antenna shapes and its capability in detecting partial discharge in high voltage transformer bushings

Investigation of antenna shapes and its capability in detecting partial discharge in high voltage transformer bushings / Farah Adibah Kamarulzaman
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Presence of partial discharge (PD) activity in the insulation medium is one of the factor that can lead to the transformer failure. Recognising the PD existence at early stage may help in preventing the sudden failure of power equipment besides can increase the availability and reliability of the high voltage (HV) transformer. Therefore, PD detection device is required to detect and monitor PD activity in liquid. For this project, modified bowtie antenna, big circle of loop antenna and small circle of loop antenna are proposed as the PD detection device over, operating frequency from 10 kHz–1 GHz. Thus, the objectives of this project are to investigate the performance of developed antennas through parameter modifications and to identify the capability of developed antennas to detect occurrence of PD in transformer oil. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software and network analyzer are used to distinguish these antennas’ frequency response characteristics; bandwidth, return loss and resonant frequency. Then, PD detection experiment is conducted in the HV laboratory and needle-plate electrode configuration is used as its PD source. The Impedance Matching Circuit (IMC) device is deployed and PD pulse signal is simultaneously recorded using oscilloscope at applied voltage of 27 kV as the antenna captured PD spectra with frequency range of 50 kHz-1 GHz through spectrum analyzer. The PD spectra captured by antennas at distance 1 and 2 meter were examined. The data obtained show PD spectra mostly occurred at frequency range 20-50 MHz and three antennas are able to detect PD in transformer oil but small circle of loop antenna has the better sensitivity compare to other antennas.
