Synthesis and characterization of modified tungstophosphoric acid MgO-SBA-15 catalyst on esterification of lauric acid and glycerol

Synthesis and characterization of modified tungstophosphoric acid MgO-SBA-15 catalyst on esterification of lauric acid and glycerol / Chan Kah Soon
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ SBA-15 catalysts with HPW were synthesised by direct synthesis method. Modification was made by incorporation of MgO on the support of catalyst. The modified catalysts were applied in the esterification reaction between lauric acid and glycerol for 6 h at 160°C. High conversion of lauric acid at 88% and yield of monolaurin at 49% were achieved. This result was performed by catalyst 20%-HPW-MgO-SBA-15. It was taken for subsequent reactions which had the parameter of reactant molar ratio (glycerol to lauric acid) changed. It was shown that reactant molar ratio of 4:1 gave the highest conversion of lauric acid and yield of monolaurin. All the catalysts synthesised were sent for characterization tests by using FT-IR, SEM and EDS. MgO was well dispersed on the support of catalyst and did not affect the structural morphology. Conversion and selectivity of the desired product were not only affected by the catalyst, they also depend on the reaction parameters.
