Nickel metal hydride (nimh) battery charger_Gunaselan Raman_E3_2011_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ Among all rechargeable batteries, nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are gaining popularity in the market to power portable electronic devices such as video camera, cellular phones, portable gaming device and etc. However, many nickel metal hydride battery charger do not provide efficient and reliable charging cycle. This battery charger without any charging termination control unit would damage the batteries and shorten their effective lifetime. In order to tackle this problem, microcontroller-based battery charger for nickel metal hydride is introduced. The microcontroller will monitor and control the charging process without any human interference. The use of microcontroller has been considered in order to simplify the hardware requirement (number of component used) and provide a powerful and simply charging circuit. This battery charger is design to charge a 8.4 volt nickel metal hydride battery by using constant current charging method. The charge termination method used in this charger design is Negative Delta Voltage method and followed by the trickle charging method to top up the batteries. For safety purpose, Timer termination and Temperature Cutoff method are also included in the design. With this features, the battery charger can avoid overcharging the batteries and ensure that the batteries are properly charged so that they can operate at their optimum rate thus prolonging the batteries lifecycle.
