Analysis of the effects of non-linear load_Mohamad Yusri B Che Mee_E3_2011_875003949_00003089505_NI
________________________________________________________________________________________ Non-linear load is very much in demand all over the world, regardless whether they are industrial, commercial, or domestic users. These loads have the ability to distort the voltage and current waveforms. Non-linear loads cause very high levels of total harmonic distortion current, THDi. Energy meter (kWh meter) is an instrument that is used to measure electrical energy. To standardise the kWh meters, they are calibrated under sinusoidal voltage and current condition. Since the waveform of non-linear loads are no longer sinusoidal, so this project is carried out to determine whether the meter read the same value or not. Energy meters can give different results when there are harmonics or non-linear loads. This project investigates the effects of non-linear loads on the accuracy of energy meter reading. The energy meter that being used in this project is the induction type kWh meter. The comparison between the readings of kWh meter and Fluke 43B Power Quality Analyzer is carried out. It is found that the percentage error of kWh meter is determined when the THDi is increased. By assuming that the average THDi for residential premises is 40%, the results show that the percentage of error of kWh meter is -1.66%. In this project, the voltage source is assumed not polluted with harmonic content.
